The Pathways School at Edgewood is designed for students whose primary interest lies in making a successful transition from high school to post-secondary life through classroom instruction, community-based experiential activities and therapeutic support. The program focuses on career exploration and development of independent living skills.

Students:

The Pathways School - Edgewood admits students who are:

  • between 15-21
  • interested in obtaining and maintaining employment
  • motivated to complete a high school program
  • committed to the expectations of the transition process
  • determined to have needs consistent with the program and its structure

Staff:

The Pathways School - Edgewood staff members include:

  • Principal
  • Vice Principal
  • administrative assistant
  • MSDE certified teachers
  • therapists
  • community support staff
  • job coach
  • transition specialist
  • crisis intervention specialists
  • speech therapists
  • contractual occupational therapist
  • consulting psychologist and psychiatrist

Setting:

Classrooms, therapy rooms, conference rooms, a library, multipurpose rooms, and staff offices are available to The Pathways School - Edgewood at the school's location in the Luther Rice Memorial Baptist Church, Silver Spring.  In addition, the program utilizes a variety of locations in the communities surrounding the school and the students' home to implement the program.  The program is accessible by Metro.

Program Description:

The Pathways School - Edgewood offers a unique curriculum which integrates academic, therapeutic, and vocational services through school-based and community-based programming.

Instruction:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • volunteer community service
  • social skills and self-advocacy skills
  • career exploration and preparation
  • daily and independent living skills
  • consumer education
  • speech therapy
  • occupational therapy

Therapy:

Clinical services provided at the school include:

  • individual therapy
  • group therapy
  • family counseling
  • social skills counseling
  • crisis intervention
  • recreation, art, drama, poetry
  • support groups
  • individualized behavior management

Transition support services: 

  • career exploration
  • job development, including:
    * volunteer experience
    * internships
    * competitive employment
    * work crew
  • job coaching
  • job maintenance support
  • post-secondary linkages with:
    * community colleges
    * trade schools
    * potential employers
    * adult service agencies
