The Pathways School at Hyattsville, Maryland, is a therapeutic elementary and middle school program providing a supportive, structured environment in which students may begin to understand and manage their behavioral and emotional difficulties and experience academic, social and personal growth.

Students:

The Pathways School - Hyattsville admits students who are:

  • between 9-14 years of age
  • in grades 4-8
  • identified in need of intensive special education services
  • interested in self-improvement

Staff:

The Pathways School - Hyattsville staff members include:

  • Principal
  • MSDE certified special educators
  • licensed clinical social workers and certified counselors
  • instructional assistants
  • crisis intervention specialists
  • speech therapist
  • occupational therapist
  • consulting psychologist and psychiatrist

Setting:

Classrooms, offices, therapy rooms, conference rooms and multipurpose room will be available in The Pathways School - Hyattsville at the school's new location in the Kiplinger Building in Hyattsville. The program will be accessible by Metro bus and subway. 

Program Description:

The Pathways School - Hyattsville provides services that will facilitate students' academic and behavioral progress.

Instruction:

The elementary and middle school curriculum focuses on core courses such as:

  • Reading and Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Units of study and exploratory activities include:

  • Health
  • Music and Performing Arts
  • Art
  • Home Economics
  • Career Awareness
  • Drug Prevention

Therapy:

Clinical services provided at the school include:

  • individual therapy
  • group therapy
  • family counseling
  • crisis intervention and mediation
  • social skills counseling
  • recreation, art, drama, poetry
  • support groups
  • individualized behavior management
  • speech therapy
  • occupational therapy

Transition Support Services:

Students ready to begin the transition to public school and/or high school receive transition services including:

  • transition counseling
  • academic support
  • school visits

Other transition support services include:

  • career exploration
  • community experiences and field trips
