The Pathways School - Northwood at Hyattsville in Hyattsville, Maryland is a therapeutic educational middle and secondary program providing a supportive, structured environment in which students may begin to manage their emotional and behavioral difficulties and experience academic, social, vocational, and personal growth.

Students:

The Pathways School - Northwood at Hyattsville admits students who are:

  • between 11-18 years of age
  • in grades 6-12
  • identified in need of intensive special education services
  • motivated to receive a high school diploma, if in grades 9-12

Staff:

The Pathways School - Northwood at Hyattsville staff members include:

  • Principal
  • Vice Principal
  • MSDE certified special educators
  • licensed clinical social workers
  • instructional assistant(s)
  • speech therapist
  • occupational therapist
  • crisis intervention specialist
  • consulting psychologist and psychiatrist

Setting:

Classrooms, offices, therapy rooms, conference rooms, and multipurpose room is  available in The Pathways School - Northwood at Hyattsville at the school's new location in the Kiplinger Building.  The program is accessible by Metro bus and subway.  

Program Description:

The Pathways School - Northwood at Hyattsville offers a unique academic program designed to meet the requirements of each student's Individual Educational Program (IEP) and facilitate students' academic and behavioral progress.  High School classroom instruction will satisfy state and county requirements for a Maryland or District of Columbia high school diploma, a Maryland or District of Columbia high school diploma, or a Maryland or District of Columbia high school certificate.  

Instruction:

The curriculum focuses on middle and high school requirements based on the core subjects:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Additional courses include:

  • foreign language 
  • fine arts
  • health 
  • career and vocational exploration
  • physical fitness

Therapy:

Clinical services provided by the programs include:

  • individual therapy
  • group therapy
  • family counseling
  • social skills counseling
  • crisis intervention
  • recreation, art, drama, poetry
  • individualized behavior management
  • support groups
  • speech therapy
  • occupational therapy

Transition support services:

Students ready to begin the transition to public school and/or high school receive transition services including:

  • transition counseling
  • academic support
  • school visits
Other transiton support services include:
  • career exploration
  • community experiences and field trips
  • job development and maintenance
